This project required detailed structural assessment and modelling of the existing residential structure to accommodate a new second floor curved penthouse level overlooking the Solent and Portsmouth spinnaker tower. This required capacity assessments of existing structural elements throughout the building down to foundation level. The key feature was the analysis of the new curved roof woodwork and supporting curved structural steelwork requiring detailed integration to enable easy of construction on site.
This project required an array of building engineering techniques to be used comprising a discrete raft foundation formed immediately by the public highway. The provision of an external mechanical lift to the front garden that was incorporated within the balcony framework and supported by the new foundations. The new balcony was to be of a 14m clear span structural glulam timber beam enabling the parking of vehicles below. A feature of this balcony was its ability to support and integrate a bank of solar panels due to its southerly aspect.
